The Knowledge of God

2009 July 15

“…incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:2-5)

How many of us are actually doing this?  Am I even doing this?  My guess is that the believing church falls woefully short of God’s glorious invitation to know Him.  I know I do.  And this inadequacy of knowledge and understanding does ourselves, the nations and the remnant of national Israel a grave disservice.  How are we supposed to fulfill the Great Commission or provoke Israel to jealousy and direct them into saving faith in Messiah if we do not know Him ourselves?  I fear we are too comfortable with this One we serve, or the One we think we serve.  God is not like us.  He has more for us than the nice life that we’ve carved out for ourselves.  He wants His Son revealed to the earth, and we are the means by which He has chosen to do so.

This revelation of Jesus will not come on the run.  And we cannot testify of that which we have not seen.  We must get back to the ancient paths and lay hold of this God that we say we serve so that we can reveal Him to others.  The church has an invitation to search out the mysteries of God and obtain the revelation that those of old and the angels of heaven have longed to look into, but most of us are so consumed with the Jon and Kate saga or the Michael Jackson circus that we can hardly muster up enough desire to open the Bible, let alone spend the time and energy it takes to search for the knowledge of God in it.  This is going to change.  God is not honored by half-hearted sacrifice; even now the call is going forth to summon those who truly want Him, into the Word of God.  It will be those vessels that are trusted with the mysteries of heaven and the responsibility of manifesting those mysteries to the broken, dying world.

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.(John 6:63)

This world is passing away and in just a second, we will give account for our lives and it will be clearly seen whether we loved the Truth or lived to satisfy the lusts of the flesh.  This is the only shot we have to live holy unto the Lord as a people set apart for His desires.  We must repent of our selfishness and cast off the chains that are holding us back from an intentional pursuit of God.  There is no one like Him and no one has ever seen Him, other than Jesus (John 1:18).  So if we are going to declare what He is like to the nations and especially to Israel, then we need to plant ourselves in the written word and begin meeting with the living Word.  There is no substitute for biblical study; it is time for the church to quit sending one man up the mountain to hear from God and take that journey themselves.
